Australia's imports from India are very diverse and even though currently the volumes are not very large, there is a marked growth. Australia traditionally imports textiles and clothing from India, however the primary items are pearls, precious and semi-precious stones, made-up articles such as textile materials, floor coverings, jewellery, textile yarn and crustaceans (sea food).
Followed by engineering products, manufactures of base metal, footwear, travel goods & handbags, women's or girls clothing and men's or boys' clothing. Other commodities include chemicals and related products, plantation & agricultural products.
India's exports to Australia increased by 14.6% to A$ 1.12 billion in 2004. This was 14.6% higher than the corresponding figure of A$977.7 million in 2003 which is expected to rise even further in 2005 / 2006.
Opportunities for Australian Businesses
Potential for Indian-Australian cooperation exists in information technology; biotechnology (both plant and human); drugs and pharmaceuticals; financial services; infrastructure development including roads, ports, airports and railways; power sector; mining; oil and natural including LNG; water management, soil conservation and waste disposal; food processing and agribusiness; film and television; processing of gems and jewellery; tourism; and education.
